About The Artist
GJ Vanderlinde incorporates gold leaf and bars into abstract pen and ink drawings. His work focuses on questions of perception and value and ranges from simple formal arrangements to subjective and visually abstract compositions. Every Vanderlinde piece contains pure gold bullion.
Thinking about real and subjective value. The work can never depreciate to a value less than the gold it contains, and as the value of gold rises, so does the value of the work.
"The effect of light on the leaf creates opportunities few other materials do. It is not only about the work, but also about how it is perceived in different spaces and at different times by different people".

Vanderlinde was born and raised in South Africa and uses his work to investigate issues related to value and meaning.
"At the core of my work are questions of value. How is this work valued, first as art and secondly as an object? My goal is to create a unique combination of artistic and economic, perceived and real value".

"No other material has shaped humanity and culture as gold has. Gold is a fundamental material; there is no other material like it. It is my joy to work with it, and share it with those who appreciate it and the value it offers."
